How to Choose Between the New 2025 Mazda CX-70 and 2024 Mazda CX-90
April 11 2024,
With the arrival of the new 2025 CX-70, Mazda now has two modern large SUVs to offer buyers who need space and practicality. Here are some of the ways in which the 2025 CX-70 and the 2024 CX-90 differ and why you should choose one over the other:
Interior Space
While both the 2025 Mazda CX-70 and the 2024 Mazda CX-90 share the same platform and most of the same design, they have one main difference: their seating capacity. Indeed, the new CX-70 is a traditional five-passenger two-row SUV and the CX-90 is a six, seven, or eight-seater three-row model. This makes the CX-90 more convenient for families and those who often transport lots of passengers, but it doesn’t mean that the CX-70 is not also quite practical in its own way. This is because despite having one fewer row of seats, the CX-70 is only very slightly shorter overall than the CX-90, which means that it benefits from the same generous amount of cargo space behind the front or rear seats.
Pricing
Another difference between the 2024 Mazda CX-90 and the new 2025 Mazda CX-70 is the pricing structure. As expected, the slightly smaller CX-70 is a bit more affordable than the CX-90 when comparing similarly equipped trim levels. What can be more surprising is that the larger CX-90 is the most affordable of the two SUVs, thanks to the entry-level GS trim level that isn’t replicated in the CX-70 lineup. This means that buyers can get their hands on the same modern design, powertrains and features for about $4,000 less by choosing the CX-90. Nevertheless, those who are looking at better-equipped versions will find both SUVs are priced almost the same, making it so that they can pick their favourite without having to worry about financial matters.
Unique trim elements
The 2025 Mazda CX-70 also differentiates itself from the 2024 CX-90 by its exclusive gloss black accents all around the exterior, which replace the chrome elements used by the CX-90. This has the effect of making the new model look more dynamic and youthful than the larger SUV, which aims for traditional elegance. Unique alloy wheel designs as well as an available red leather interior complete the package and solidify the CX-70’s position as a sportier option.
A great choice no matter what
As mentioned before, the 2025 Mazda CX-70 and the 2024 Mazda CX-90 use the same platform and the same mechanical elements, which means that no matter which one you choose, you can benefit from the brand’s latest developments in electrified drivetrains. Indeed, all of the versions of the CX-70 and the CX-90 are equipped with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that uses a brand new 3.3L turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine. This powertrain can deliver either 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque or 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, depending on the trim level. The other very advanced powertrain option is Mazda’s first plug-in hybrid system to be offered in Canada. By combining a 2.5L Skyactiv four-cylinder engine and a larger 17.8 kWh battery, this powertrain makes a generous 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque while also allowing up to 42 kilometres of fully electric range.
