What to Expect About the Upcoming 2025 Mazda CX-70?
January 26 2024,
Mazda is just about to introduce a brand-new model to its SUV lineup for the 2025 model year: the CX-70. While the full details are not yet known, enough information has been released for us to have a fairly clear idea of what to expect. Here are those details:
Sharing its platform and powertrains with the CX-90
The upcoming 2025 Mazda CX-70 will be built on the same platform as the new CX-90, which means that it will benefit from a RWD-biased architecture that allows for a more dynamic character than most other SUV models. In addition, the CX-70 will also offer the same powertrains as the CX-90, including the PHEV version. Therefore, we can expect to see the 3.3L turbocharged inline-six-cylinder mild-hybrid engine under the hood of the standard CX-70, while the plug-in hybrid version will use a 2.5L Skyactiv four-cylinder engine and an electric motor. In the case of the CX-90, these powertrains generate up to 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque for the gasoline model and 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque in the hybrid model.
Since the CX-70 is expected to be smaller than the CX-90, the electric range of its PHEV version should be greater than the 42 kilometers offered by the CX-90.
Only five seats
Speaking of size, the 2025 Mazda CX-70 is said to be a two-row version of the CX-90, which means that it will be able to transport at most five passengers while the larger model can welcome up to eight people in some versions. By shortening the CX-90 and removing the rear-most seats, Mazda could position the CX-70 in the midsize two-row SUV, a segment it isn’t currently occupying. While this category of SUVs might not seem very practical, there are many buyers who want a spacious vehicle that can transport lots of cargo while not really having the need to transport more than a few passengers on a regular basis.
Similar in appearance to the CX-90
While it is too early to tell what kind of visual changes Mazda might have made to the CX-70 to differentiate it from the CX-90, the current consensus in the automotive industry is that these changes might not be very significant, with the CX-70 sharing the overall look of the CX-90. Of course, we expect the CX-70 to be shorter than the current SUV, but this could possibly be the extent of changes visible from the outside. The interior of the CX-70 is also likely to be familiar to those who know the CX-90, sharing its design theme and its upscale materials, which include Nappa leather and genuine wood trim in the upper trim levels. For an idea of what the 2025 Mazda CX-70 should look like, you can also take a look at the Europe-only CX-60 SUV, which is a smaller and narrower version of the CX-90 designed for tight European roads.
